Scheduled Construction: 2008
Estimated Cost: $8.1 million
The new 34,000 square-foot building will house the State of New Mexico’s permanent archaeological collections in two climate-controlled repositories, as well as providing offices and laboratories for the Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS). The Center will be the initial building in the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Collections and Services Campus to be developed on the southwest edge of Santa Fe.
In compliance with Governor Richardson’s executive order for new state buildings, the design will achieve, at a minimum, a LEED silver rating. The pitched-roof repositories will be housed in insulating-foam formed concrete walls. OAS’s archaeological specialty laboratories and offices are organized around the analytical labs that are at the heart of the office’s investigative studies. The analytical labs will be lit by north facing arc-shaped light scoops. The exterior will be finished in multiple stucco colors compatible with the building’s high-desert setting.
