A pioneering joint effort of Bernalillo County and East Mountain Charter High School, the project will add 19,000 square feet to the ten-year old Vista Grande Community Center. The addition will provide the 330 student high school with a full-size regulation maple-floored gymnasium suitable for competition play. The building is designed to facilitate the addition of a future expansion, housing auxiliary exercise rooms and a climbing wall, when funding becomes available. Located against the backdrop of the Sandia, San Pedro and Ortiz Mountains, the building’s exterior stepped massing and mix of brown and dark green stucco harmonize with the scale of both the existing community center and with the natural landscape. All site landscaping is composed of native grasses and shrubs that will require no irrigation once established.
