With the completion of the current expansion, the Rio Rancho Animal Control Facility, originally constructed in 1989 and expanded in the late ‘90s, will be built out to occupy its entire one-acre site. Prior to the recent addition, the 2,500 sf facility could accommodate only 25 dogs in enclosed kennels with exterior runs. The 2,000 sf addition added 34 more kennels paired with exterior runs. In addition to the kennels, the facility has a cattery with a capacity of 60. An existing administration building provides adoption areas and clinical spaces.
While the design of the new addition continues the architectural vocabulary of materials - exposed textured and integrally colored concrete masonry - and forms found in the earlier buildings, a number of environmental improvements were introduced. To reduce noise Tectum brand fiber panels were used for the roof decks. The new kennel areas have a water-repellent coating to reduce the need for frequent repainting, and increased natural light improves the disposition of the animals. Cost-effective heating is provided in the kennels by overhead radiant heating, while evaporative cooling prevents overheating while providing positive air pressure to remove odors from the building.
