New
Mexico State Monuments
The
proposed 10,000 square foot visitor center at Fort Selden State
Monument will house exhibits, public meetings, classes, and staff
work areas. To complement, but to avoid mimicking the historic
adobe ruins, much of the new building is proposed to be of exposed
rammed earth. The building's broken and rotated masses, and low
height, further differentiate the building from the historic ruins
while also integrating it into the site. To provide views of the
ruins and the adjacent mountains, the lobby features a west facing
glass wall. To control solar gain and prevent glare in the lobby,
a ramada structure visually extends the lobby space out into the
site. Construction is awaiting funding.
