HILAND THEATER
Bernalillo County

Master Plan and Phase Two Development

Bernalillo County purchased the Hiland Theater in 2003 by for use by Musical Theater Southwest (MTS), who later withdrew from the project.  Beginning in the Fall of 2003, Kells + Craig, with associate architect Devendra Contractor, developed a multi-phase master plan for the renovation of the classic 1950s movie house.  Phase I proposed to transform the theater into a performing arts venue for MTS as well as for touring productions. The design included replacing the small stage with a full-sized stage and orchestra pit, expanding the wing space into the adjoining structures, and upgrading theater lighting and sound systems.  Due to insufficient funding and the withdrawal of MTS, the project was put on hold.

A total re-roofing of the 45,000 s.f. facility and mechanical and electrical systems upgrades were completed in the summer of 2007.
